Winter 1999 Outburn, ~ Octavia: "Shadow Light first stepped into the light with their stunning 1996 debut Within the Shadow Light, released on Ivy. Now this Seattle based band is back with their complex and dramatic release, Hello Darkness on their new Tragick label. Shadow Light are moving forward with their sound and embracing a more experimental and rock element, rather than a straight forward gothic sound. Led by John E. Clough, visionary and vocalist, this four piece band also features some great guest musicians which add to the flavor and quality. One of my favorite songs is the stripped down "Memories of Dying" with lovely female backing vocals, beautiful drums and guitars, and mournful male vocals. Another favorite is "The Reason" with spoken vocals and swirling atmospheres. While some of the songs are slower, there are still plenty of tracks that rock with hard guitars like the upbeat and loud "Lingering Doubt" or "When We Pretend' with its strong gothic synths and intense vocals. The tongue in cheek "Gothic Pose" also provides some levity. Hello Darkness is an exceptional release worth checking out, and if you like this one, you'll probably also love the more melodic and traditional goth sound of Within the Shadow Light.

Oct. 1999 Starvox, ~ Anthony Flores: "I discovered Shadow Light not long ago. I caught one of their shows here in Seattle at The Vogue . I was so taken with their show that I sought out their amiable frontman, John Clough. I asked to hear more of them, and this is what I heard. "Hello Darkness," is the second full length release of this local band. Their first release was Within The Shadow Light on Ivy Records. John has worked with local band Faith & Disease among others here in Seattle. With his musical bloodlines it should come as no surprise that this album is a nice piece of work."

Apr. 1996 Pandemonium, ~ JoAnn Green: "The end result is a darkwave vision brimming with creativity and unexpected detours. At first listen, the album seems seeped in gothrock, although electronics are prevalent. But John's sound doesn't fall into the typical industrio-goth or darkwave hybrid. There's a diversity of sound within that simply defies categorization. Like a dim light glimmering through fog, Within [the Shadow Light] casts reflections of distorted and blurred beauty, and heightens the desolation of the lyrics."

May. 1996 Enzyme, ~ unknown: "Dark music from the Ivy Records sector in Seattle. Associates of Faith & Disease release 9 songs with gothic fastings and words about loss of sanity, getting away and getting out-- The darker side of life. Well produced Goth with industrial overtones, baritone male vocals and female embellishment..."

1997 Voltage, ~ David Slatton: "All you vamps and other children of the night should sink your teeth into this release. The best tracks offer a slow inevitabilty and industrial edginess, like "Last Chance" and "Crazy". The macabre lyrcial themes and spooky voice of Clough will send chills down the spine, and the intense programmed rhythms and haunting guitar riffs (by pFrenz-C and guest spots by Greg Forschler of Fear of Dolls) provide a lot of energy to the dark atmosphere. I also liked the meloncholia of "Sanity" which features Faith & Disease's Dara Rosenwasser on backing vocals and Eric Cooley on bass. Most of the more captivating songs are of the uptempo Goth variety, but the cover of the Who's "Behind Blue Eyes" slides in as an interesting counterpoint to the rest of the CD. Highly recommended for a hi-protein diet."

Summer 1996 Mere Mortal Productions, ~ Guy Addams: "Horror, the undead, mental and emotional pain, and a very pure form of insanity... such is the story that Shadow Light conjures. The music is usually of an industrial gothic flavour, but songwriter John E. Clough isn't afraid to step beyond the boundries of what's expected of this genre. It displays a bold and honest writing style that disregards all the "rules" set by most gothic "connoisseurs". All in all, I must say this release is certainly interesting."

1996 Middle Pillar Distribution, ~ On-Line Catalog: "Seattle based Goth rockers present a very well done 9 track debut featuring the mesmerising voice of John CLough. Comparable to LAM [London After Midnight], Bauhaus, and very Christian Death.
